Psychology Major FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR INTERNAL TRANSFERS TO PSYCHOLOGY
The following information is provided to help you determine if Psychology is the major for you as well as provide guidelines as to the change of major process.
Is Psychology the Major for you?
A core component of the Psychology Department’s Strategic Plan is the teaching of Psychology as a science. Compared to other schools, our curriculum is one of the most rigorous as students are required to take three courses (PSY 121, PSY 203, and PSY 299) that involve statistics and research methodology. Many students (42%) also choose a 400 level course with a research emphasis and also choose 300 level courses with lab/research components. Strong quantitative skills, critical reasoning and writing are necessary for success in this major and discipline.
Who may apply?
Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and complete an application to apply for status as a Pre-major in Psychology. These are minimum requirements and do not guarantee acceptance. Factors such as appropriateness of Psychology as a major (as reflected in the essay), completeness of application, size and quality of applicant pool, will also be considered. All pre-majors must receive a grade of C+ in both PSY 101 and PSY 121 and maintain an overall minimum GPA of 2.0 before being accepted as a full major.
Where to get an application.
The application form for a change of major into Psychology may be obtained from our website (Link to Form Genie Application). Students must complete the on-line form. This form should then be printed and submitted as part of the application. Completed applications must include 3 COPIES of: printed copy of on-line form, essay, timeline, and unofficial transcript (printed from TESS).
- ESSAY: On a separate page answer the following questions in an essay format (approximately 500 words). Why are you applying to the Psychology major? How did you become interested in Psychology? What are your career aspirations and how will this major help you achieve them?
- TIMELINE: Review the requirements for the Psychology major listed on our department website (http://psychology.department.tcnj.edu/) and the program planner listed on the Records and Registration Program Planner site (http://www.tcnj.edu/~recreg/programplanners/). Prepare a timeline detailing how you will complete this coursework in your remaining semesters.
When should an application be submitted?
There are two times during the year when applications will be reviewed. Applications will be accepted from September 15th through October 1st for Spring registration. Applications will be accepted from February15th through March 1st for Fall registration. Applications received before or after those deadlines will not be accepted. Three copies of the application must be delivered to the Psychology Department office in 109 Social Sciences. Prior to submission of the formal application, the student may wish to discuss the matter with the chairperson or associate chairperson of Psychology.
When will you be notified?
Students submitting an application during the stated deadlines will be notified before the next registration cycle.
